The front door opens, and suddenly your dog transforms into an Olympic sprinter who has been training for this exact moment since puppyhood. Why? Because to a dog, the outside world is not “outside”. It’s a living, breathing newspaper made entirely of smells. A dog’s sense of smell is dramatically more powerful than ours (we’re talking tens of thousands of times more sensitive), so every breeze carries breaking news: who walked by, which squirrel committed crimes at dawn, and whether the neighbor’s terrier is emotionally stable today.
On top of that, many dogs have a strong exploratory drive baked into their genetics. Breeds developed for hunting, herding, or guarding were selected to move, investigate, and respond quickly. Add a dash of excitement, a sprinkle of routine (door opens = walk time?), and you’ve got a launch sequence. It’s not rebellion. It’s curiosity plus instinct plus “THE AIR IS DIFFERENT”.
Training can absolutely help manage the door-dash, but the impulse itself? Pure, nose-led enthusiasm.

Ah yes, the Chihuahua: six pounds of trembling audacity and allegedly spicy opinions. But the “mean” label is less about villainy and more about misunderstanding.
Chihuahuas were bred as companion dogs, forming intense bonds with their chosen humans. That loyalty can easily tip into protectiveness, especially if they feel their person is threatened. Now add their size: being tiny in a world of giant feet is stressful. When a dog feels vulnerable, it may use big signals - barking, growling, snapping - to create space. That’s not malice - that’s self-preservation.
Small dogs also tend to get less consistent training because people assume they’re harmless, which can accidentally reinforce reactive behavior. And because their warning signs are dramatic (tiny body, huge voice), they get noticed. Proper socialization and respectful handling go a long way.
So are Chihuahuas inherently mean? No. They’re compact, loyal, sometimes anxious dogs who have decided that volume is a valid survival strategy.
